I'm realizing I like small companies. Big companies scare me.

What brought this on - which big companies scare you? AT&T? Microsoft? Al airlines? All gas companies?

What's all the joy about Google Jaiku. Wake Up, it's 1984, Google is Big Brother now.

If you lived in a suburb of a big city, I'd bet you wouldn't wish to be annexed!

So wipe off that joy on your face and think long range. The end is near :-)

Small companies sometimes miss the bigger picture. Large companies sometimes step all over it...

I know where you're coming from Leo. I enjoy working with small companies more – they're more agile. We do need big companies too though. They build the infrastructure.

Depends on what you want. If you want to clock in, work like all day, clock out and fergetaboutit, big companies have good benies. Flexibility, speed, personal responsibility, and insecurity, no medical/dental/vision/life go with the small guy. Alternatively, you go completely off grid and become a consultant.

Small company vs. big company talk is so '80s. I believe it does not matter if the company is consistently innovative.

you said it yourselves Leo, all these new web 2,0 sites will get bougth or go under. I like Jaiku, and I like google so I am all happy... It would have bin worse if it was going to be a part of m$, imagen jaiku.live.com

I work in a small company (13 employees, non-tech, coffee roaster). Big companies can throw labor and cash at problems to find solutions. Small companies have to work hard and think about how to solve an issue. If there are three people in production how do you increase production by 20%? We cant just hire a new guy. You work hard a s a team and look for new ways of doing things. Its an everyday processes for us.

@sjefen6: not everything MS does is crap; in fact, the Live team do some very nice work, and I don't see why Jaiku would necessarily suffer if they became part of the Live team. Sure, MS is generally slow to innovate, but you'll find Google will become the same. The larger the company, the slower they are to turn on a dime.

@chieftwit I am right there with you good sir! I work for a small paging company http://www.pager.net. Also, right next door one of my owners works with his good friend John Carmack on their aerospace stuff. http://www.armadilloaerospace.com/

@BarbaraKB but its kind of like working from a budget. If you don't have it you cant spend it. I am having to hold back on some ideas and it forces me to take another look at how we are going to move forward on a project. Its good. Google can afford to buy dodgeball and then let it go to waste. I see them moving ahead with Jaiku.

I've only worked for big companies. The potential instability of small companies is a bit unsettling... unless I own it ;)

I use to work for big companies I agree with the instability and that happens to smaller more often than bigger. Also, the insurance for bigger is typically better.

For me, it is not about whether the company is big or small by itself. It is whether they have values and ethics that they will not compromise. This leads me to private companies since they are less willing to "sell out" to please outside parties. I like companies that stand for more than simply making a dollar more than last quarter.

Few public companies are willing to stay their course and maintain their core values and beliefs (if they have any ethics and values at all) regardless of what Wall Street says about them. Many seem to define ethical behavior as anything that is legal and the only thing they value is money. It doesn't have to be that way.
