Tonight on TWiT we concluded that the real reason Google acquired Jaiku was to gain access to the insights of Jyri and Petteri.

They're clearly shrewd guys, but I think this was about a big hole in Google's portfolio that they had to fill...

hopefully it gets integrated into a mobile suite with mail, im, and contacts which also connects to grandcentral.. Be cool if as a grandcentral user you could receive an SMS sent to your number as a direct jaiku message.

BTW - Petteri is out. Jyri confirmed via jaiku when they had his going away party...

Petteri didn't like buy-out? Doesn't want to work for Google? Or is it more take the $$ and run?

Hey Leo, any idea why your main blog isn't updating in Jaiku this weekend?

Just a quick comment: Petteri's going away party was for his move to US to work for Google. It was a great party indeed!

My Jaiku hasn't updated since they made the announcement. It seems like they just closed it all down.

I agree that Jyri and Petteri were a factor in the decision to buy Jaiku over Pownce or Twitter. But, I don't think that is THE reason for the acquisition. I still hold to my theory that a Google Mobile App or Suite is coming - including ability for Google to serve up location-based ads.

@jrhitterman, In my opinion, I don't think that Google is doing a gPhone. Google has never done hardware no matter how much speculation there was that they would.

I documented my Theory in witting: http://teddism.com/2007/10/12/why-google-needed-jaiku/
