Get a Beagle. my brother just got one, he's a great dog. they don't get that big, and are so adorable when they are young, he bought his when he was 2 months old.
Here on the compound we have (currently) three cats, one dog, one horse, one donkey, one goat, and one buffalo. Okay, the buffalo is an aluminum statue, but he's life size.
Agree with rjl210 beagles are really good dogs. They are very loyal and just smart as can be. I had never had one till we got our stray DollyDog.
My life wouldn't be the same without her.
They don't shed either, if that is something u are lookin in to.
That's not a boys dog. If you must get him a small dog, at least get him a cool one. Like a Boston terrier. Jack Russells are also great boys dogs, but they do get bored easily and will either chew stuff up or escape if not entertained..
My canine Pal is "Dolly" a Maltese X Miniature Poodle. Fabulous disposition, athletic and doesn't shed which is great for those allergy sufferers in the family and just a great all around companion. I wasn't a pet person before Dolly but I wouldn't be with out her now!
I prefer a Golden retriever. Something to think about! Got a deal on a horse, the guy's son was an early teen, then a year later the kid got a truck and lost interest in the horse. You know how it is ... wheels ...

I'm always amazed that you say your not a dog person. Anyone who keeps goats is alright in my book, but dogs are best.

I'm a medium dog guy myself, german shepard, lab, retriever, etc. Had a lab growing up, tons of fun to play with.

I have a Maltese -- I absolutely love him. No shedding, no dander, easy to train. Great for allergies.
