Don't know about Down Under...here in the Frøzen Nørth, the first Saturday evening after the the summer solstice is Sankthansaften (Saint Hans Evening). Everybody goes out to the highest hills in the areas and starts a big bonfire, roasts weenies, and gets bombed. Whee!
Winter Solstice .. aka .. the shortest day of the year.
So both hemisphere are stupid: there's still 24 hours in the day. We're really talking about daylight.
For us, it means that as of today (it's now the 22nd) the daylight hours start to increase and it's a happy time. For you unfortunately, it will now start to get dark earlier.
You ain't lyin', Rick. In the next week we'll be seeing the beginning of the southward shorebird migration through New Jersey. I've always thought the Winter Solstice was the happier holiday, from the optimism standpoint. That is, if you like daylight... Because of the tilt and orbit, the earliest sunset in the Northern Hemisphere is a few days before the shortest amount of daylight, so by solstice it already seems to be staying lighter later.
It's not that dark down here (thanks Linda! :P). "Winter Solstice" or "Shortest day" are the most common. Sometimes, it gets called "Bloody cold", but that's overstating things really :)

I'd assume what bluesky said, since this is their winter.
