I think I'm gonna break down and splurge for a Canon 5D.

That's quite a splurge... I'm using a 30D and have been thinking about making the jump myself... just need to find a good excuse to justify it :)

Drooling over Nikon D-80 myself. Canon vs. Nikon? I do like the Nikon lenses. Ok: Compare/contrast... talk among yourselves.

I have the D70s now... would love the D80, but I think Canon kills Nikon in tech -- they are much more massive as well and have some rather substantial resources to develop products

That's a lot of camera. Do you already have Canon glass? Get something good, and don't try to get 1 lens that does everything.

I am a Nikon fan, but it's the ergonomics that get me: in my hands, the Canon's don't feel right while the Nikon's are intuitive. As with anything, I recommend trying it out, but it sure sounds like you already have, so have fun shooting!

Nikon all the way. Never had a single problem with a Nikon camera and I like the fact that you can use all the old lenses with it. I dunno, somehow I never liked Canon cameras - it's always the Nikons I lust for. Just saw someone with a D200 the other day while running in the park... I was drooling all over the place!

I have an older digital rebel eos, it's not a bad camera (its not the camera that takes good pictures it the photographer blah blah blah :0) ). But, that new Nikon is one I'd drool over too.

I have a D200 and a file FM3A, and a ton of glass. Some of my shots.

But, really, this is a "vi or emacs" argument. Any of the better cameras on the market will take awesome photographs. My buddy Roger swears by Olympus, and he works on the Jason Webb Space Telescope!

Hmm... Nice pictures! I agree with the vi/emacs thing (I'm a vim guy myself, BTW). You choose one, you stay with it.

Hey, maybe you could have a "opening the box for the first time" show on Stickam......

I have 2 20Ds and I 1Ds Mark II and love them. I really like my 1Ds Mark II for the full frame; I know a Pro Photographer that has a old school 1D (11Mp), bought a 5D and now uses the 5D as his main camera. It's a beautiful camera....great camera and huge LCD.....that's what mine doesn't have....mine is pretty small....uh....the LCD is small....not what everyone is thinking....you know.....my lens.

I'm meny311 on Jaiku, Twitter, Myspace, Digg, Vox, Facebook, stickam, ustream....the list continues.

I am so jealous... you have so many gadgets. May be you should start a contest for your old "junk" like Engadget. :P

The 5D is a great camera. I personally have the Rebel XT. I work at a photography studio and we use a couple 20D's. We did borrow a 5D for a big family shot and we have a 30"x40" up on our wall and it looks amazing. We are trying to get our new owners to buy us one.

It has been out for over 18 months so my guess is it will be replaced before the end of the year.

Of course the glass makes a big difference, we have the Canon 24-105L IS F4 and the Canon 70-200L IS F2.8. The 24-105 is a great all around lens.

So Canon is releasing the 6D the day after you get your 5D! And it is half the price :)

@artimeg: I'm with you and believe the L-series glass is the key factor; for Nikon I believe the ED glass is equivalent. The big front elements, glass quality, and coatings make a huge difference.

I went with the D200 because of the case (and using my existing Nikon glass). I shoot in the rain and near the sea quite a bit and wanted the extra seals the D200 has that the more consumer-oriented Nikon's don't.

The 5D is even more pro than the D200, of course, but I'm trying to relate to what I own.

You know the camera is only the tip, then you've got to invest in lenses and terabytes of storage to store the photos.

Can't go wrong with a Canon, Leo. You sure have nice problems.

I love my Rebel XTi, but spending $2600 for a 5D (without a lens!) is not something I think I need right now. Hell, mine cost like $1300 with the lens i use now.

iPhone, 17" Macbook Pro, Skype, Slingplayer, Parallels 3.0 - I think I have a problem, Leo Laporte.

I have the Cannon Rebel XTI and I love it. My first digital SLR and I'm now starting to get some compliments on my photos, where as before, I just got the usual comments. It's not as compact as most of the cheaper cameras, but the results are well worth it.

Wow. I was just playing w/ my Canon D60 tonight thinking that I ought to get it cleaned and wondering if it is time to upgrade.

I think I'm waiting for one in this quality range (not a rebel, not a 1Ds Mark II) that has wireless capabilities. I have one point-n-shoot that has wireless download of pix and I just don't understand why all cams don't have that now. It's the sh*t. :)

  • fabsh

SLRs don't have it because professional photographers use mobile data services like GPRS to transmit their photos and they are very obsessed with battery life (which dies fast with every kind of wifi implementation).

2 years, 5 months ago by fabsh

  • CookieDuster

faster to swap data cards than download, one pro I've worked with recently has an assist grab the card, download and then edit on laptop in between set ups

  • pamon

c'mon leo... can't get the folks at canon to give you one in exchange for some TWIT advertising. or maybe put together a photography podcast and use the canon 5d as your shooting camera for the cast.

  • pamon

yep... twip... this week in photography

  • warza

There's already a photo segment of sorts on the techguy podcast.

2 years, 5 months ago by warza

  • fabsh

A photography podcast sponsored by Canon? That's the last thing we need, besides, there are already enough of those.

2 years, 5 months ago by fabsh

  • warza

Contests are sponsored by Canon and they encourage creativity so the idea isn't that bad.

  • Vincedog3

5d is an awesome camera. Better use great glass. Light fall off at the corners is a problem. I like the no crop, and no lens factor too. Great choice Leo. Though I love my D200 and D70s. Canons rule overall. If they make bodies like Nikon, I'll jump over to the Canon ship.

  • funcrunch

We've ordered one for my office. I got to try it out on rental the other week - very high quality. Plus we have several old Canon lenses we can use.
