I'm uncomfortable getting in line publicly to wait for the iPhone. Journalists don't act like fanboys. Cover the line not be the line.

Is your area well populated and crowded? I'm hoping that where my chosen store will be OK given it's "out there" location - not that I'm a celebrity or anything. I just want to get one with the least hassle.

it is a dilemma. be the reporter, be the line, be a part of the 'happening'. Glad it's you having to choose.

I've heard that there are 1000 phones at each Apple store. It won't be necessary to get in line unless you want it Friday night.

I am dismayed by the number of "journalists" who are acting like this is the second coming. This is exactly why blogs and podcasts are treated like second class citizens by mainstream media. We need to advocate for users, not the companies we cover.

Leo, if you get in-line with Kevin and Alex in Palo Alto, it'd probably be more acceptable since you're friends with them and it's more you're covering the launch, than getting a phone yourself.

Or you could get Hank to stand in line for you. Of course, he might think that means he gets to keep the phone.

Had to do a little business here at my AT&T store today. No line here in suburban Lake County, Florida. They are closing at 4:30 pm and reopening at 6 pm. The girl helping me seemed to expect a crush. I checked out the iPhone kiosk and it really did look pretty cool.

I was in NYC today and saw about 8 people dealing with the heat and waiting ...

My brother is kind of frantic. He's not sure whether he should wait at the Apple Store or at AT&T. But he's not willing to start camping out tonight or early tomorrow morning (mainly because his boss, while knowing my bro wants an iPhone, is expecting my bro to show up for work at least for half the day). I was trying to help him decide which store to check out, but I don't really know. Apple stores are too visible, too easy for everyone to flock to. But they probably will have more stock than the AT&T stores. Advantage of AT&T stores is lesser (hopefully) concentration of people since there are more locations.

I'm not even buying an iPhone tomorrow, but I'm just as frustrated as if I were! :)

If you really want the phone on friday, you really can't help but fall in line! And besides you need the phone for the radio show right?

So you're going to get one Saturday morning then do your radio show? Thats kind of tight timing

Leo, I agree with your thinking and applaud your ethics. Journalists should not become the news. When you become part of the story credibility is greatly diminished.

@Atmasphere: my bro has already done extensive research on the potential locations he wants to try hitting. He just is unsure of whether he'd have better luck (i.e. more stock) at the Apple store or an AT&T store. I think he decided that he's going to try the AT&T store near his work, but if he strikes out there, he'll head out to the Apple store. I hope he gets one; he's been so looking forward to it. And hey, that means I'll get to see it in person, too. :D

Well if you were going down to Palo Alto CA. to the Apple on University Ave. I was going to make the trek. But since it just Kevin and Alex holding the fort I am going to pass on this one.

Leo, please take a picture of your iPhone with your n95. How cool would that be?!

I think your over reacting. You can cover the line by being in it. Your covering the experience of being a fan boy, and beside the world already knows you are an Apple fan boy, and no one thinks there is anything wrong with that.

Just got back from my local AT&T store in suburban Lake County, Florida. I went in for a new simcard and not the iPhone. I was told on the QT (on the down low for you young folks) that they only have 30 phones. There were about 15 people in the line. There is a credit check and you must be 18 for the credit check. If your credit doesn't qualify you'll need to pay $500 for the phone AND a $500 deposit. However, the GOOD NEWS is that it is every bit as cool as it looks on TV according to the clerk. She's played with one, watched YouTube on it and says it is just as fast as it looks on TV. We'll see for sure tomorrow.
