dang, 5MB -- that's airborne broadband! you're wired for speed, Leo! I think it was about $40-50/month? Your segment on The Laporte Report, The iPhone Luser was hilarious. That Bill Handel is a wild man.
Are you sure you're testing right? EVDO Rev 0 was around 600kbit, rev A is approx 1.5 megabits. I usually get around 600Kbit/sec while tethering my verizon blackberry.
good catch Merlyn. if you read Verizon's T&C's, way down near the bottom, anything over 5GB/month will be considered "suspicious": "Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate..."
You are restricted to: "may ONLY be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation). "
"In addition to the increase in the maximum burst downlink rate from 2.45 Mbit/s to 3.1 Mbit/s, Rev. A has a significant improvement in the maximum uplink data rate, from 153 kbit/s to a maximum uplink burst rate of 1.8 Mbit/s." sayeth the WikiBible, chapter EVDO, verse 10. I've gotten 2200 down, 700 up. But 5000 down seems a bit... excessive.
Leo, I agree with cjweeks... methinks you should doublecheck your speedtest.
We have hundreds of speedtests posted by members of http://www.EVDOforums.com represented in a google mash-up at http://EVDOmaps.com and nobody has even gotten close to 3mb. 5mb is just too hard to believe.
Why not post a graphic from broadbandreports.com or speedtest.net to show us?
Our company has introduced a product to add value to the EVDO and 3G cards in the market. Take a look, we appreciate your feedback.
http://www.controlware.de/cwp/1629_1928.php
Key features:
Backup - automatically switch between primary and second carrier. Secondary carrier can be wireline or wireless. Most small buildings only have one carrier servicing them so the wireless option is the ticket.
Load Balancing - Static or Dynamic
If you want to use this router with Verizon you must sign up for a "Mega" mainly designed for business. See previous posting on limited usage. Very important
Businesses using VOIP must have a backup plan, if the loose Internet no voice service.
Thanks

Leo, you have a faster downlink speed on EVDO than we have on ADSL in South Africa!

I've been looking at that for a while now. Maybe I'll make it my next 'treat' to myself. Does it work inside as well as outside?

Now you understand why people are so unhappy that Apple chose only to support Edge. Imagine the iPhone with 5MBps down!

I noticed that when the iPhone releases in Europe it will run on 3G. Very interesting!

Just remember: verizon = 5 GB / month limit. Sprint = no limit. You bet on the wrong pony.

Not to mention: Sprint = EVDO-A everywhere, Verizon = "what's EVDO-A?".

we in europe go happily with hsdpa mobile access @ 3.6mbit/s downward... really looking forward to the 3G version of iPhone :)

I.e., more than 5GB per month is considered prima facia evidence that you're DLing copyrighted material.

merlyn, actually... verizon recently announced that their entire EVDO network is now at Rev-A... Sprint has yet to finish their rollout.

Cool - the pressure from sprint must've done it.

I want Evdo wireless! makes my dsl feels slooooowwww!

You're right Randal. I was mistaking my DSL results for the EVDO results. The card disconnected itself. It's 1.5/500 just as advertised.

I hacked my BlackJack to turn off 3g. EDGE is fast enough for me and a lot better on both coverage in the DFW area and I now get 3x the battery life.

The Verizon cap is why I went with Sprint. I think Shooby has Sprint, right? They should do a review.
