Just ordered a Nokia N95. Looks like the perfect Jaiku client. Is that so wrong?

    Fantastic phone! I'm jealous!

    Wrong? No. Geek cred? Definitely.

So Jaiku only works with Nokia, or could it work with other phones as well?

2 years, 7 months ago by theartguy

  • ChristianBurns

How many people are going to not want to live without that device because of Jaiku addiction

@theartguy : Well, I'll say this much. The SIS packages don't work on my Sony Ericsson P910i, even tho most Nokia S60 packages do. Until the java client is out. I think I am stuck ... at least.

"5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS, 802.11g WiFi, HSDPA, microSD, 150MB of internal memory"

Every time someone orders a Nokia, an iPhone looses its wings :(

Leo, can you please add me as a friend?

Cingular supports HSDPA in SF - one reason I want to try the phone. The nice thing about my job is that I can justify my geek lust by saying, "hey I need to review it." (Of course my stupid ethics also mean "hey, I need to buy it.") The built-in GPS sounds sweet too, even though I just bought the Mio.

$750 from Tiger Direct, but it'll probably take a while to get it - I'm sure it's backordered. Meanwhile I'll just have to suffer with the N93i loaner from Vox. ;-)

Personally I'd rather have Jabber capabilities. To me this whole Jaiku etc thing is a nice distraction while at work, when I'm out in the real world I'm not all that worried about what's going on in Jaiku-land. That's just me though... but the more people who can't break away the more fun distractions I have at work so go for it Leo :-)

that's a tough penny.. and here i thought the iPhone was crazy expensive..

That's a great phone, terrible battery life though.

2 years, 7 months ago by GeekSpeaker

  • ChiefTWiT

Uh oh - I should of thought of that. I won't use it for music playback but I was hoping to use the camera to do short podcast videos. I'm used to charging my devices every night - nothing lasts more than a day any more.

What kind of battery life are you getting?

2 years, 7 months ago by ChiefTWiT

  • GeekSpeaker

On a normal day like 3-4 hours of use. A car charger is going to be a good friend!

Sometimes geeks can't help themselves and we buy stuff. I can't even use the excuse of "I need to review it". Ask my wife.

Leo, it's Warren in Burbank. Would you please put me on your contact list?

Holy cow, that phone looks like a backwards Game Gear...

Whoaa.... $750 .. geez Leo... the iPhone is coming in a couple of months for less than that, and if your main interest is as a client for Jaiku I'd get a phone that has a full keyboard.... I've also heard that it doesnt have good battery life

2 years, 7 months ago by RedPlaneta

  • SLam

Most definitely, we got to have the latest and greatest!

@chrishanson - I agree. I'll be looking for IM support for the S60. Possibly Fring? Looks very interesting - espeically VoIP with the 802.11g support in the N95.

I have become a convert to the unlocked GSM phone. Locked handsets are crippled to the point of uselessness.

2 years, 7 months ago by ChiefTWiT

  • SLam

Skype on the N95? that would rock!

2 years, 7 months ago by SLam

  • GeekSpeaker

That Fring thing looks interesting but have you seen it in action yet?

2 years, 7 months ago by GeekSpeaker

  • bwana

From what I read, it doesn't support the US bands for HSPDA. The billion other cool features on it make up for it. This is truly a super phone.

2 years, 7 months ago by bwana

  • atmasphere

No 3G Leo... 2100 UMTS only which is European. It's EDGE and WiFi for the US. Should still be quite excellent for Jaiku. You can get Shozu installed and post to Flickr and YouTube (or Blip and even WordPress) from each 5MP snap you take... even geotag courtesy of your internal GPS.

I'm very jealous. My N73 is starting to feel old with the N95 out...

2 years, 7 months ago by atmasphere

  • ChiefTWiT

@Geekspeaker - there's a demo video on the Fring blog: How to make a SIP call using fring. It uses the N95 so I know it will work. He uses Gizmo but it's supposed to work with Skype as well.

@bwana - that's a bummer but since Petaluma doesn't have HSDPA it's not a deal breaker. I'll probably use it with T-Mobile most of the time anyway which is still sloooooow EDGE.

@sheryl4321 - if Telus is GSM you should be able to use it no problem. It's an unlocked GSM phone. Rogers is GSM, I know.

Geez $750? Sweet phone, I'm jealous, but isn't the iPhone coming out in 62 days? Skype on that thing would be nice though drools.

    2 years, 7 months ago by gamgee911

  • GeekSpeaker

Sounds sweet! I find it difficult to believe that Fring will work on GPRS though! So when are you gonna get the phone Leo?

2 years, 7 months ago by GeekSpeaker

  • merwolf01

Wow. That is a nice phone, but really power intensive. I think that's one of the things blocking widespread addition of 802.11 to phone sets - it sucks power like crazy.

    2 years, 7 months ago by merwolf01

  • SLam

definately, 802.11 + bluetooth will definitely suck any phone dry in no time!

2 years, 7 months ago by SLam

  • ZyphBear

@ChiefTWiT - It's a nice unlocked phone, but I would miss the QWERTY on my BlackBerry, I really like having that available to me. Also why I don't want SureType on the Pearl. While I would love the HSPDA (3.5G) speeds, the lack of full keyboard would drive me nuts.

@sheryl4321 - I didn't think telus was a GSM based cell phone company like Rogers.

Gizmodo posted an N95 review yesterday "Why it rocks, why it sucks": http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/gizmodos-long+ass-nokia-n95-review-why-it-rocks-why-it-sucks-250902.php

About the battery life thing: THAT'S why I'm so interested in Wireless Electro-magnetic induction power (i.e. SplashPad and eCoupled). Then again, Tesla had it right the first time without using potentially harmful radio waves (though the kind of voltages these devices use are too small to be noticed anyway)... ahh well. People are afraid of what they don't understand. rant? what rant??

    2 years, 7 months ago by Vertigo1

  • GeekSpeaker

@RedPlaneta - 18 Hrs of battery life on heavy usage? I find that hard to believe.

@GeekSpeaker: The N95 with integrated ethanol fuel cell LOL

2 years, 7 months ago by RedPlaneta

  • GeekSpeaker

    @RedPlanet - LOL

Anyways what I think is the N95 is a great phone just don't complain about the battery life. Also accidentally dropping this thing isn't such a good idea since it does the splitz very well. O_o

@Leo: Are you generally using the Jaiku Web site to post? I wish there was something like Twitterific for Jaiku to save leaving a browser window open... is there an app out there yet that I haven't heard about?

2 years, 7 months ago by bmmimages

  • atmasphere

there are a few quicksilver scripts and apparently the mobile client will do comments soon which will be quite nice

2 years, 7 months ago by atmasphere

  • ZyphBear

@bmmimages - I heard of some quicksilver scripts for OSX, but not any independent apps or widgets or other ways to send other than spending that money on international texts or leaving a browser window open.

2 years, 7 months ago by ZyphBear

  • bmmimages

@ZyphBear: Yeah, I saw the Quicksilver scripts, but it seemed like too much work, even though I live in QS, thanks to Merlin Mann. :D I'm sure a little widget/app will come along; it didn't take long for there to be a Twitter one.

The HSDPA on the Nokia N95 is Europe-specced only and unfortunately won't work in the U.S.

2 years, 7 months ago by nicolelee

  • Metsevn

I wonder if the built in GPS would allow up to the minute update of your location in Jaiku...

2 years, 7 months ago by Metsevn

  • atmasphere

Jaiku said actually that GPS is built-in but not enabled yet ... so yes!
